I smiled. It was the first real smile I’d had in a while, and it felt a little rusty, like a door nobody had opened in months.

I opened the alert without thinking much about it. The painters weren’t supposed to start until Monday, but contractors show up early sometimes. Or maybe it was a package. I’d ordered new curtain rods, and I couldn’t remember which address I’d used.
