After my divorce, I bought a house without telling more than a handful of people, partly because I wanted the freedom to make one major decision in my life without someone else questioning it, and partly because I was afraid that if too many people knew, someone would eventually find a reason to tell me I was making a mistake.
Eleven days later, while I was visiting my sister four hours away, my security system sent me a motion notification, and because I was expecting a delivery that morning, I opened the alert without giving it much thought, assuming I would see a driver leaving a package by the front door before going on with his day.
Instead, I watched a moving truck slowly back into my driveway.
