A Gift, and a Criticism
On Halloween evening, Emma’s father, Zach, arrived. He took one look at the handmade dress and made his opinion clear.
“You’ve always been good at making do,” he said. “Just never good at actually buying your kid a proper costume.”
Then he handed Emma a store-bought princess costume, an expensive one chosen by his new partner, Stacy. He even raised his phone to record Emma thanking Stacy for it.
Her mother stood quietly at the kitchen sink. Three nights of work had just been dismissed as a poor substitute for something with a price tag. She said nothing, but it stung.
What Emma Did Next
A few minutes later, Emma appeared at the top of the stairs. She was wearing her mother’s pale blue dress. On her head sat the tiara from Stacy’s gift.
“You can film me now, Dad,” she said.
In one small, deliberate choice, Emma honored both women. She didn’t reject her mother’s work to please her father, and she didn’t snub Stacy’s gesture to defend her mother. She showed a maturity that surprised both of her parents, especially since she had never wanted the two women to compete over her.
