The Call That Ended the Silence
That night, child protection was notified.
I sat beside my son’s hospital bed and watched him sleep.
All I could think was how close I’d been to missing it.
Sending him back with nothing but a hug and a promise.
He stirred and whispered, half-asleep:
“Dad… am I in trouble?”
I swallowed and shook my head.
“No. You’re safe. That’s the only thing that matters.”
Somewhere else, his mother was about to learn something too.
This time, the silence was over.
