The doorbell rang. I froze in the middle of the bathroom.
“There’s someone outside…” I whispered.
“Don’t open it,” he said immediately. “What are they saying?”
I slowly walked toward the door, each step like walking on thin ice. The yellow light in the living room cast twisted, trembling shadows on the wall.
I pressed my ear against the door. A man’s voice. Young. Polite. “Good evening, ma’am. We’re from the condo administration. There’s a problem with the pipes. We need to check right away.”
My stomach tightened. “Love… they say they’re from the admin.”
