The Part That Turned It Personal
I sat perfectly still, listening.
Like if I moved, the truth would disappear.
The teacher’s voice kept going.
“You think the rules don’t apply to you because you’re sweet and everyone likes you?”
“Let me tell you something, little girl — being cute won’t get you far in life.”
I could hear Lily sniffling, trying not to cry.
Then:
“And stop crying! Crying won’t help you.”
“If you can’t behave, you’ll spend recess inside.”
My chest felt tight, like someone had wrapped a belt around my ribs.
