My eyes did not lock onto her bright makeup. My eyes dropped instantly to her collarbone.

It was the exact, one of a kind anniversary necklace Gregory had commissioned and given to me five years ago, right after Toby was born. It was the most valuable thing I owned. It was the necklace I kept safely locked inside my velvet jewelry box, resting on the mahogany dresser in our master bedroom. A necklace I only wore on special occasions because Gregory said it was too valuable to risk losing in public.

The woman frowned, touching the pendant self consciously as she noticed my stare. “Is there a problem?”
