Judy smiled warmly at me. She genuinely believed she had given us something meaningful. She had chosen the card with care and thought her words would make us feel appreciated.
“Thank you,” I replied. “It’s a lovely card.”
I could have asked why the others received money while we received a greeting card. The question was right there, waiting to be spoken.
But it was Easter Sunday, and Judy had been preparing dinner since early morning. I didn’t want to turn a family celebration into an uncomfortable discussion, so I thanked her and passed the dinner rolls to Kim.
And I want to make one thing clear: I was happy for Kim, Jeff, and Stacy. Their circumstances were different from ours, and I understood how much the money could help them. Kim’s two boys were sharing one bed, and a home of their own would give them more room to grow.
