I Sat in the Cramped Break Room, Sipping Coffee, When a Colleague’s Offhand Comment About Secret Superpowers Hit Too Close to Home

With the review meeting approaching, I found myself increasingly restless. My usual routine of lectures and lab work provided little distraction. The thought of the meeting lingered at the edge of my consciousness, a constant reminder of the precarious balance I maintained.

Days passed in a blur, each one bringing me closer to the inevitable. My interactions with colleagues became more guarded, my responses measured and cautious.

One afternoon, as I was packing up my things, a younger colleague approached me. Her recent promotion had been a sore point, a testament to the department head’s preference for conformity.

“Hey,” she said, her voice tentative. “Got a minute?”

I nodded, though my instincts told me to be wary.

“I heard about your project,” she continued, her tone sympathetic. “It’s a shame how things turned out.”

I offered a noncommittal smile, unsure of her intentions.

“If you need any support,” she added, “I’d be happy to help. I know how tough it can be to stand out in this place.”

Her words were unexpected, a crack in the facade of indifference I had come to expect. It was a small gesture, but it offered a glimmer of hope.

“Thanks,” I replied, my voice softer than I intended. “I appreciate it.”
