And across the lawn, next door, an ambulance was parked in Mrs. Higgins’s driveway.

No lights on the ambulance. No siren. The back doors were open. Two paramedics were standing beside it, not moving fast.

Not moving fast at all.

“Ma’am,” the sheriff said flatly. “We need to ask you some questions about Mrs. Higgins.”
