I could hear snippets of words, accusations that felt too close to home.

“…always in everyone’s business,” my mom’s voice rose above the din, sharp and defiant.

“You need to mind your own before you ruin lives!” the neighbor retorted, their voice carrying a strange urgency.

I felt a chill run down my spine.

Why did it seem like they were talking about me?

I stood up, moving to the window, trying to peek through the gap in the curtains.

The yard was partially hidden from my view, and the frustration of not knowing gnawed at me.

The tension in my chest tightened, a coil winding ever tighter.

Did they know? Did everyone know?
