We Built a Life from Nothing
I convinced him to go to prom.
“They’ll stare,” he muttered.
“Let them choke,” I said. “You’re coming.”
We rolled into the gym under cheap lights.
People stared. Then they adjusted. Moved chairs. Made jokes until he laughed.
My best friend Jenna hugged me in her sparkly dress and teased him.
“You clean up nice, wheelchair boy.”
We danced with me standing between his knees, his hands on my hips, swaying like it was normal.
No one from my side came.
After graduation, we got married in his parents’ backyard.
