The Question That Stopped the Table
On Daniel’s fifty-fifth birthday, the joke came around again. This time, for reasons I still can’t fully explain, I asked: “Who was the first wife?”
The laughter died instantly. Nobody answered. The silence around that table told me everything I needed to know: there was a secret, and everyone in the room had been in on it except me.
The Photograph and the Pendant
After dinner, I cornered Daniel’s brother Mark. He didn’t deny it. He showed me an old photograph of Daniel standing beside a woman in a wedding dress. Around her neck was a gold pendant, the same one Daniel had given me on our first anniversary.
Her name was Joanna. She and Daniel had been engaged before he ever met me.
When I got home, I found something else: an old VHS cassette tucked inside a safe Daniel had always told me was broken. His mother had begged me not to watch it alone. In that moment I understood that the truth was heavier than anything I had imagined.
What Happened in 1994
When Daniel came home, he told me the story he had carried for decades.
On the day of their planned wedding in 1994, Joanna was seriously injured in a car accident. While she lay in the hospital, she and Daniel held a private ceremony and exchanged vows. It wasn’t legally recognized, but to them it was real. Six days later, Joanna died.
