For the first time since she picked him up, Valéria smiled.
That evening, Miguel walked into his small apartment, still holding the contract.
Sofia ran toward him the second she saw his face.
“Did you get the job?” she asked, eyes wide.
Miguel crouched down, pulling her into a tight hug.
“Yeah,” he said quietly.
Then, after a small pause, with a smile she would never forget:
“I just had to take a different road to get there.”
