The rain didn’t fall that morning.
It attacked.
It slammed against windshields, swallowed gutters, and turned the streets of São Paulo into gray, angry rivers. Water rushed over curbs. Traffic lights blinked through the haze like they were struggling to stay alive. Thunder cracked so hard it sounded like the sky was splitting open above the city.
Miguel Andrade stepped out of his battered Chevrolet pickup and the cold punched through him instantly.
His flannel shirt clung to his back. His jeans were so soaked they felt twice their weight. Water dripped from the brim of his old cap straight onto his nose.
Then his phone buzzed in his pocket.
Reminder: Job interview in 10 minutes.
Miguel looked at the screen.
Then he looked up.
About twenty yards ahead, near the flooded shoulder by Marginal Tietê, a black luxury sedan sat tilted at an angle, one side half-sunk in mud. The driver’s door was open. A woman in a sharp gray coat stumbled out, one heel buried so deep in the muck it looked like the road was trying to drag her under.
