According to a survey conducted by The Economist/YouGov from January 16-19, 2026, **71% of Americans** believe the United States is “out of control.”
Only 18% of respondents said they think things are “under control,” with the remainder unsure or not expressing an opinion.
The sentiment crosses party lines to a notable degree. Reports indicate that even significant portions of Trump voters and self-identified conservatives expressed similar views that the nation has veered off course.
The poll comes amid ongoing debates over economic pressures, immigration policies, foreign affairs decisions, and domestic priorities in the early months of Trump’s current term.
Public unease appears tied to perceptions of chaos in governance and national stability, as highlighted in coverage by outlets including Newsweek, The Daily Beast, and USA Today.
No immediate response from the White House to the specific poll findings was available at the time of publication. The Economist/YouGov poll surveyed 1,722 U.S. adult citizens and carries a typical margin of error of around ±3 percentage points.
