A Gunman Had a Young Waitress at His Mercy — Then an Old Biker Walked Through the Door


I wasn’t supposed to be there. My plan was to ride straight through to Memphis. But the gas gauge was dropping and my stomach hadn’t seen food since breakfast.

So I pulled off the highway around midnight. Some beat-down truck stop diner with half the letters burned out on the sign.

I pushed open the door and the first thing I heard was crying. Not quiet crying. The kind that comes from someone who’s already given up.
