Back at the hospital, Lily finally stirred. A small, weak cry—thin but alive—filled the pediatric bay.
Evan flinched, then leaned in like the sound was oxygen.
“Hey,” Sarah whispered. “She’s back.”
Evan didn’t smile. He just exhaled for what felt like the first time in years.
Detective Reyes returned, kneeling beside him again.
“Evan,” he said, “the police went to your house.”
Evan’s body went rigid. “Did he come?”
Reyes chose his words carefully. “No one is taking you back there.”
Evan stared at him, suspicious, like safety was a trick people said right before the bad thing happened.
Reyes continued. “Your mom… she can’t come right now.”
